Know All About Blepharoplasty

· Health Care

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure in which droopy eyelids are repaired. The procedure may involve removing excess skin, muscle, and fat. As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken.

One of the major reason for some people to consider eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is droopy eyelids. The surgeon removes and tightens the excess eyelid skin for an attractive and younger look.

At times, blepharoplasty can also improve vision by providing a less obstructed field of view, because of improvement in the droopy eyelids.

Excess skin, muscle and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids can be removed with blepharoplasty. In some cases, one might need only skin removed but not muscle — or one might need the procedure done on both upper and lower eyelids.

People often confuse upper eyelid blepharoplasty (also called an "eye lift") with upper eyelid ptosis surgery. With upper eyelid ptosis surgery, one can raise the position of the upper eyelid margin by tightening the muscle and tendon that normally elevate it. With Blepharoplasty Surgery in India, sometimes one can elevate an upper eyelid margin slightly if the droopiness is caused by the heaviness of the excessive skin actually "weighing down" the upper eyelid.

Cosmetic Blepharoplasty ( eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure that is not medically necessary and is performed solely to improve one's appearance.

Unfortunately, our upper and sometimes lower eyelids may become droopy or baggy as part of the ageing process.

In some cases, due to a hereditary problem in the family, the skin of the eyelid stretches, the muscles also weaken and fat pockets as they bulge become prominent.

Cosmetically, such conditions may detract from the overall attractiveness of our eyes and face and cause a tired or older appearance.

Different types of surgeons, like general plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons can perform cosmetic blepharoplasty.

One might consider blepharoplasty if one has excessive drooping and sagging of skin around eyes, which often is due to normal ageing. Sagging skin may also be due to other factors such as puffy eyes caused by eye allergies or edema.

Your doctor also will evaluate you for possible surgical risk factors such as dry eye problems, thyroid eye disease, and diabetes.

There is an increased risk of surgical complications in smokers because they heal very slowly. One may be advised by the doctor to quit smoking for at least several weeks prior to a procedure.

However, depending on one's health and other factors, a blepharoplasty can last as long as 10 years.
